Peace of mind in fire security

Ductwork

Any ducting that passes from one fire cell to another that cannot have a fire damper (e.g. kitchen extract or stair pressurisation), is required to have a fire rated board fitted to it.

By installing a mineral fibre board, a ducts fire rating can reach 2 hours. Ideally the mineral fibre board should pass through the penetration also. Once the board is fitted and the duct is secured, the gap between the duct and cell wall or floor needs to be packed with a semi flexible fire rated material. Commonly superwool (replacing kaowool) is used, but, once it is compressed it squashes and doesn’t return to the original size (a few materials previously mentioned could perform better).
